In Their Own Words: Parent of a Child with a Disability

First Name: Shawn

Type of disability: Parent of a child with Down syndrome

If there was one thing that you wish people better understood about your specific type of disability, what would it be?
IThat kids with disabilities are more alike than different. Kids with Down syndrome light up with a little positive attention. Otherwise, their light remains hidden. Matthew has a lot of light to share.

One thing that people can do to make other people who have your son’s type of disability feel more included, whether it is at work, school, or another community organization would be:
Just take an interest- strike up a conversation. The most hurtful thing that a person can do to another is ignore them. Invite them to sit with you- draw them into an activity. People without disabilities need to make a proactive effort- it will be well worth it.

What would you say is your greatest source of pride?
When Matthew smiles- those little gems of happy moments when we connect or he connects with another. I realize that he does not have to conform to our world to be happy. His happiness is success to me.
